Risk management departments scramble with high-profile moves


Walmart’s senior director for global risk management is among those who changed roles over Christmas and the New Year. Brian Sammons, who had been at Walmart for more than four years and head of investments for its captive, Broadstreet, said took a job as Director of Insurance for Digital Realty.

The real estate investment trust focuses on carrier-neutral data centers and provides colocation and peering services. It also has its own captive insurance company, used to partially fund earthquake insurance deductibles.

In the UK, Somto Obi, BT’s former chief risk and finance director and a member of its captive management sub-committee, has started a new role as group insurance director at Johnson Mathey.

He joins specialty chemicals and sustainable technologies after nearly two decades at BT.

There was also a wave of promotions. Among them is Jan Virtavuori of Finnish marine and energy specialist Wärtsilä. Secretary J of the Finnish Risk Management Association has been promoted to Director of Risk Management and Insurance. At Luxembourg-based satellite and terrestrial telecommunications network provider SES Satellites, Egle Grabun, who joined Aon in December 2020 as a senior insurance specialist, has been promoted to director of insurance.
